2010 Program Launched
We have launched our 13th year of Great Lakes Scholars by contacting Principals and Teachers around the Great Lakes region and asking them to submit to us the names of their best and brightest. Only teachers may nominate a student to be a Great Lakes Scholar. The Nomination Deadline is March 10, 2010. Teachers: To nominate a student online click here.
2010 Baseball Game Dates Announced
Great Lakes Scholars Nights @ the Ballpark are back again in Detroit and Chicago to honor Great Lakes Scholars! The schedule makers were kind too: we were able to include the White Sox in their trip to Detroit and Detroit in their trip to Chicago as part of the festivities. In Detroit, the dates will be July 21 (vs. Texas) and August 4 (vs. the White Sox). Chicago will host the Tigers on August 14. We will make tickets available for sale ON THIS WEBSITE beginning May 1st. Remember: only Scholars who purchase their tickets through Great Lakes Scholars receive the Field Pass to participate in the ceremonies. The Detroit Tigers were kind enough to supply us with video from the camera they used to project Scholars onto the big-screen scoreboard. You can hear the PA announcement in the background honoring Scholars. Click here to watch the video. We had a great crowd and a lot of fun on August 3rd at Comerica Park. We also had a lot of fun at our other two Great Lakes Scholars events in 2009: July 22nd at Comerica Park and August 8th at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
Miss Sarah Zwirner named 2009 Great Lakes Scholar Teacher of the Year
After sorting through many outstanding essays from students nominating their teacher for the 2009 Great Lakes Scholars Teacher of the Year Award, we are excited to announce that Miss Sarah Zwirner has been recognized for this honor. Miss Zwirner is a teacher at Carkenord Elementary School in Chesterfield, MI and was nominated by her student, Kayla O'Malley. Miss Zwirker is the fifth honoree since Great Lakes Scholars instituted the award in 2005. Congratulations to Miss Zwirner and Kayla! Thanks to everyone who nominated their teachers. The area is blessed with many fine educators!
